Things to see Tips for Tokyo
Must-visit landmarks, hidden gems, and sightseeing
Tokyo metropolitan building in shinjuku has FREE observation decks 45th floor. Completely free no lines same views as skytree without the ¥2000+ robbery
Open until 21:30 most days so sunset and night views both work. North tower usually less crowded than south. Security just checks bags quickly
Honestly better than skytree because youre not fighting instagram people for window space. Clear day = mount fuji perfectly visible. Tourist info desk has english maps too
Probably posting this ruins it but whatever saving people money is worth it
Everyone shoots sensoji temple and shibuya crossing but they're packed by 9am. Better tokyo spots for golden hour shots:
Ueno park around shinobazu pond at 6am. Gorgeous reflection shots of bentendo temple with zero people. The lotus flowers in summer create incredible foreground frames.
Tokyo station marunouchi red brick building just after sunrise. That meiji-era architecture with empty chiyoda streets looks like a movie set. JR security won't bother you if you're respectful.
Sumida river from asakusa bridge early morning. You get tokyo skytree, traditional yakatabune boats, and morning light on the water. Way better than the crowded sky tree observation decks at ¥3000.
Ok so i randomly found this place called the advertising museum tokyo in shiodome and its honestly fascinating?? Like who knew ads could be this interesting but they have vintage japanese commercials going back decades
Its free which is already amazing for tokyo but the retro vibe is incredible. They have these old coca cola ads from the 60s and early anime commercial art that looks nothing like modern stuff. Plus vintage tokyo street scenes in the backgrounds
Located in caretta shiodome basement. Takes maybe an hour to see everything but its such a random slice of japanese pop culture history. Perfect rainy day activity when youre tired of temples and want something completely different
Not everyone wants to wake up at 6am for tsukiji fish markets honestly. Heres what to do when you drag yourself out of bed at noon like a normal person in tokyo
Ginza department stores like mitsukoshi open 10am and basement depachika food courts are perfect for late breakfast plus people watching salarymen on lunch break
Museums are ideal afternoon activities in tokyo. Tokyo national museum ueno, ghibli museum mitaka if you pre-booked, roppongi hills mori art museum all work better after lunch when morning tour groups clear out
Afternoon prime shopping time in harajuku. Takeshita dori and shibuya center gai hit their stride after lunch when theres actual energy and crowds make the chaos fun
Late afternoon bars in shinjuku start happy hour around 4pm. Drinks and yakitori before dinner rush hits the yamanote line
Tokyo works better for night owls anyway - the city comes alive when neon lights up kabukicho
I am not waking up at 6am to see tsukiji fish market. Tokyo is actually perfect for night owls if you know what's open after jr trains stop.
Most tokyo museums stay open until 8pm on fridays. Department stores close at 9pm and have restaurants on top floors with city views. Big echo karaoke places are 24/7 and way more fun after 10pm when the salarymen show up drunk from nomikai parties.
Yokocho alley culture is peak evening vibes - tiny bars under jr train tracks in shimbashi that open at 6pm and get progressively more chaotic. Golden gai kabukicho doesn't get interesting until after midnight when tourist groups leave anyway.
Not everyone wants to wake up at 6am for sunrise meiji shrine photos or tsukiji market tours. Heres what actually works for late starters in tokyo
Most tokyo museums dont open until 10am anyway so no rush. Tokyo national museum in ueno is perfect for slow afternoons - massive collection and you can take your time between jr yamanote line trains
Ginza shopping district hits its stride around 2pm when lunch crowds from marunouchi business district clear. Department store basement depachika have amazing food courts for late lunch
Harajuku people watching is better in afternoon when all the decora and visual kei kids come out on takeshita dori. Grab coffee at those tiny kissaten and observe the organized chaos
Evening onsen like oedo onsen monogatari in odaiba stay open until 2am so you can do the full relaxation thing without rushing back for last trains
Since everyone asked (nobody asked), heres how to see famous tokyo spots without wanting to throw tourists into tokyo bay
Senso-ji temple asakusa: 6am or after 7pm. Local obaasan pray early before work, tourists sleep late. Revolutionary concept apparently for visiting actual functioning buddhist temple
Meiji shrine shibuya: weekday mornings practically empty except joggers. Weekend mornings have traditional shinto wedding ceremonies which are actually worth witnessing if you're respectful
Shibuya crossing: novelty wears off after 30 seconds anyway but if you must - lunch hour weekdays for maximum salary worker chaos or very late night for photos without tour groups clogging the hachiko statue
Apparently being "definitely not jeff" qualifies me to give tokyo travel advice now. Who knew fake names had such authority over yamanote line tourism
Golden hour in tokyo is tricky because of all the skyscrapers blocking light. Shibuya crossing looks best around 4-5pm when late afternoon sun hits the giant screens and reflects off the glass buildings just right. For senso-ji temple photos, early morning works but you need to be there by 7am before tour groups from asakusa station arrive.
Rainy day photography is underrated in tokyo - the neon reflections on wet streets in kabukicho red light district are incredible. Blue hour around 6pm gives you that perfect balance of neon signs and natural light for cityscape shots from tokyo skytree area.
About Tokyo
Japan's capital and the world's largest metropolitan area, blending ancient traditions with cutting-edge technology. Sensoji Temple in Asakusa contrasts with Shibuya's neon-lit crossings and skyscrapers.
