Honestly the metro is perfect for lazy travelers who don't want to deal with dubai traffic or expensive ubers. Two main lines cover most tourist stuff and it's stupidly easy once you figure out the basics.

red line essentials: starts at airport terminals 1 & 3, hits burj khalifa/dubai mall (station r25), then splits at jabal ali — One branch goes to uae exchange (near marina), other to expo 2020. Covers basically every instagram spot you want. green line: connects old dubai — Al ras station (g23) for gold souk, baniyas square (g21) for spice markets. Union station (r17/g20) transfers between lines.

Get a nol silver card at any vending machine — Costs 25 aed deposit plus whatever credit you want (minimum 25 aed top-up). Machines take cash or card, have english options. Pro tip: buy extra credit, refunding unused balance is annoying.

lazy person hacks: trains every 4-7 minutes so don't stress about timing. First carriage is gold class (costs extra but sometimes worth it for personal space). Last carriage is women and children only. All stations have elevators because apparently dubai planners aren't monsters. Download rta dubai app for real-time schedules — Works offline once downloaded which is clutch when you're underground with no signal.

Skip overpriced Saint-Germain hotel bars. Take Line 3 to République.

Candelaria: tacos up front, proper cocktail bar hidden behind. Their mezcal selection destroys most Mexico City bars.

Le Mary Celeste in Marais: technically wine bar but their natural wine list beats most Burgundy sommeliers. Stays open late.

Little Red Door near Châtelet: €15 cocktails but they're liquid art. Tiny space, book ahead or queue on Rue Charlot.

Phi Phi's done. Packed boats. Overpriced everything. Snorkel spots picked clean.

Coral Island (Koh He): Twenty-five minutes from Chalong Pier. Long Beach delivers proper hard coral formations that haven't been trampled by a million flippers. Water clarity's consistently better than Phi Phi — We're talking 15-20m visibility on good days. Day trips run 900 baht including lunch and gear, but skip the tour groups and catch the 9am direct ferry for 200 baht return.

Koh Maiton: This is where you go when you want that private island feeling without the private island prices. Pristine reefs, calm conditions perfect for first-timers. Most operators charge 1,200-1,500 baht including transfers and snorkel gear, but the coral gardens here are untouched compared to the tourist traps.

Racha Islands (the real deal): Racha Yai's decent but gets busy midday. Racha Noi is where serious snorkelers head — Deeper water, bigger marine life, occasional manta ray sightings if the diving gods smile on you. Advanced swimmers only due to currents that'll drag you to Malaysia if you're not careful.

Insider booking tricks: Use operators at Rassada Pier — Sea Star and Love Andaman consistently undercut the beach touts by 30-40%. Morning departures (8-9am) get you calmer seas and better visibility before the afternoon wind kicks up. During monsoon season, boats cancel frequently, so book flexible tours or prepare for disappointment.

Bottom line: Phi Phi's Instagram famous. These spots are actually good for snorkeling.

Trastevere before 11pm is tourist hell. After midnight its pure magic.

San Calisto on Piazza San Calisto is the dive bar. €3 beer. €5 negroni. Zero pretension. Open until 2am most nights. Freni e Frizioni on Via del Politeama does solid aperitivo but wait until 10pm or you'll be crushed by tour groups taking photos.

Skip restaurants with english menus charging €25 for mediocre carbonara. Real family places like Da Enzo al 29 close kitchens at 11pm sharp because they're cooking for locals not tourists waiting around for instagram photos. The whole energy shifts completely after midnight. Goes from selfie spot to actual neighborhood hangout where Romans drink wine and argue about football.

Take tram 8 from Largo Argentina or walk across Ponte Sisto. The cobblestone streets empty out beautifully around 1am when only the real night owls remain.

Everyone hits the main LKF strip. Big mistake. Real action is in the narrow alleys branching off. D'Aguilar Street and Wing Wah Lane have better bars with cheaper drinks and more locals.

Main Lan Kwai Fong street? Overpriced tourist bars packed with expats. Go after 10pm when office crowd clears out. While most of Central does shut down hard after 11pm, LKF's side alleys stay lively until 2-3am — It's one of the few exceptions to Central's early bedtime.

Ce La Vie on D'Aguilar has solid cocktails. Bartenders actually know their craft. Main strip just pours heavy vodka sodas. Happy hour is 5-8pm but atmosphere is dead until later.
