Safety Tips for Paris
Scams to avoid, safe areas, and general safety advice
Paris is generally very safe but here's what I wish someone told me about specific areas:
Avoid Châtelet-Les Halles after 10pm — Sketchy vibes and lots of pickpockets around Forum des Halles. Stick to Saint-Germain or Marais for evening walks.
Some Métro stations feel uncomfortable alone late. République, Bastille, Châtelet can be weird after midnight. Uber is €8-12 within central arrondissements if you're unsure about Line 1 or 4.
Highly recommend staying in 3rd, 4th, 6th, or 7th arrondissements. Safe, walkable, close to Seine and major attractions. I felt comfortable alone at reasonable hours around Rue de Rivoli and Boulevard Saint-Germain.
Trust your instincts always. If a street near Pigalle or Barbès feels wrong, head toward busier boulevards. Parisians are helpful — Ask women or families for directions to nearest Métro.
Spent two weeks solo in Paris and felt safe the whole time with basic precautions. As solo female traveler, here's what actually matters by arrondissement.
Métro safety: Avoid empty cars, especially late at night on Lines 4 and 13. Sit near conductor's compartment (front or back depending on line). Line 4 gets sketchy after 10pm around Châtelet-Les Halles but République to Saint-Germain fine.
Accommodation: Stay in 1st-4th arrondissements for first visit. Well-lit streets around Marais and Saint-Germain, lots of people around. Avoid Pigalle and Barbès-Rochechouart late at night though they're fine during the day.
Evening dining: Most restaurants perfectly fine for solo women around Boulevard Saint-Germain and République. Bring book or journal — Very normal in Paris café culture. Avoid sitting at bar counters if you don't want conversations but café terraces on Place des Vosges are great.
Emergency contacts: Download 112 emergency app. Tourist police station at Rue de Lutèce near Notre Dame speaks English. Hotel concierges around Marais incredibly helpful for directions after dark.
Trust your instincts but don't overthink it. Paris generally very safe for solo travelers in central arrondissements, just use common sense around République and Châtelet late night.
Paris generally safe but here are practical precautions based on living in various cities:
Pickpocketing hotspots: Métro Lines 1, 4, 6, 9 during rush hour around Châtelet-Les Halles station. Areas around Eiffel Tower and Louvre Pyramide entrance. Keep phone and wallet in front pockets or bag across body around République.
Avoid after dark: northern parts of 18th and 19th arrondissements around Barbès, Château Rouge Métro area, parts of Belleville (though food scene great during day). Trust instincts — If area feels empty near République late night, find busier streets toward Marais.
Evening safety: stay in well-lit areas with foot traffic around Saint-Germain or Boulevard de Rivoli. Métro runs until 2am weekends so getting home from République isn't usually issue. Taxis safe and reasonable for late night returns to Marais.
Scams: petition signers near Eiffel Tower and Arc de Triomphe (distraction for pickpocketing), friendship bracelet sellers around Sacré-Cœur, gold ring "finders" near tourist zones. Just keep walking toward République or Châtelet.
