Paris is generally very safe but here's what I wish someone told me about specific areas:
Avoid Châtelet-Les Halles after 10pm — Sketchy vibes and lots of pickpockets around Forum des Halles. Stick to Saint-Germain or Marais for evening walks.
Some Métro stations feel uncomfortable alone late. République, Bastille, Châtelet can be weird after midnight. Uber is €8-12 within central arrondissements if you're unsure about Line 1 or 4.
Highly recommend staying in 3rd, 4th, 6th, or 7th arrondissements. Safe, walkable, close to Seine and major attractions. I felt comfortable alone at reasonable hours around Rue de Rivoli and Boulevard Saint-Germain.
Trust your instincts always. If a street near Pigalle or Barbès feels wrong, head toward busier boulevards. Parisians are helpful — Ask women or families for directions to nearest Métro.
Just completed my third solo trip to Cancún and learned some crucial safety lessons I wish someone had shared earlier.
HOTEL ZONE SAFETY (very positive):
Walked alone at night between hotels and restaurants - felt completely safe with good lighting and security presence. Police patrol regularly and hotel staff are helpful. I highly recommend staying on the main Boulevard Kukulcán after dark rather than beach paths.
DRINK SAFETY WARNINGS:
Witnessed concerning situations at several Hotel Zone clubs. Always keep your drink with you - never leave it unattended. I highly recommend accepting only bottles you've watched opened or cocktails you've seen made. Señor Frog's and Palazzo were particularly crowded with aggressive drink pushing.
DOWNTOWN EXPLORATION:
Parque de las Palapas during daytime feels completely safe and welcoming. Mercado 28 has helpful vendors and good lighting. I highly recommend visiting between 10am-4pm when it's busiest. The R1 bus drivers are accustomed to solo female tourists - I never felt uncomfortable.
BEACH SAFETY ESSENTIALS:
Playa Delfines lockers cost 50 pesos for 4 hours - absolutely worth it for peace of mind. Beach vendors can be persistent but not threatening. I highly recommend the palapa restaurants like Coco Bongo Beach for bathroom access and safe drink storage.
EMERGENCY CONTACTS:
Save 911 for emergencies and your hotel's direct number. Tourist Police number: 998-885-2277. Most locals speak some English and are genuinely helpful when you need directions.
Ok so everyone does the james bond island tour right? Huge mistake. Its literally just a rock sticking out of water and you're crammed onto boats with 50 other tourists all taking identical photos
While the snorkeling spots like Coral Island are great for underwater activities, if you want cultural experiences instead of just marine life, do koh panyee floating village. Actual people live there, kids play football on floating pitch made from old planks, eat lunch with families instead of tourist buffets. Way more interesting and costs half as much
Or skip boat tours entirely and rent kayak in ao phang nga. Paddle through mangroves yourself, explore caves, zero crowds. Just you and the occasional monkey. Much better experience for cultural immersion over pure beach time
Capsule hotels can be intimidating solo but some are genuinely great for female travelers. The key is picking women-only floors or fully segregated buildings.
Book and bed in shinjuku has a women-only floor that feels like a library sleepover. ¥4500/night including breakfast and it's designed by actual women for comfort and safety.
Nine hours in shinagawa is clinical but super clean and secure. Separate entrances for men/women, great for early flights since it's near haneda train connections.
Avoid the party-focused ones in shibuya - they're loud and primarily male clientele. Stick to business districts where capsule hotels cater to professionals, not backpackers looking to party.
Hatay is the spiciest regional cuisine in turkey and aksaray has the best restaurants outside the actual province. Try muhammara (walnut and red pepper spread) and lahmacun antakya style with extra chili paste.
Warning: this isnt the mild tourist-friendly turkish food. Order aci (spicy) and they will test your limits. Bring yogurt and surrender your dignity.
