Food Tips for Pattaya

Restaurants, street food, cafes, and local dishes to try

This place is absolutely mental good. While tourists pay 200 baht for mediocre pad thai on Walking Street, locals hit Thepprasit for the real deal. We're talking 50 baht pad thai that actually tastes like something, grilled seafood skewers for 80 baht, som tum papaya salad for 60 baht. You can literally feast like royalty for under 200 baht total.

Location: Thepprasit Road near Jomtien Beach. Friday-Sunday, 5pm-11pm. Blue songthaew from Pattaya Klang costs 20 baht, or motorbike taxi for 40 baht if walking makes you break out in hives. The market stretches about 300 meters along the road - you can't miss the crowds and cooking smoke.

Must-tries: khaep mu crispy pork skin (30 baht, addictive), moo ping pork skewers (10 baht each, order six), boat noodles (20 baht per bowl, criminal how good these are). The som tum vendor with the blue cart makes versions that would make Bangkok street food vendors weep with envy. Always packed with Thai families - automatic quality indicator.

Zero tourists, maximum flavour. Hotel restaurants can keep their 800 baht "authentic Thai cuisine." This is where you actually want to eat.

Mama Noi will humble any runner who thinks they're tough because they handle energy gels and post-workout heat. Her som tam stall near Jomtien Fresh Market serves nuclear-level spicy papaya salad that's become legendary among locals. Three spice levels: farang spicy (still very hot), Thai spicy (dangerous territory), and Mama Noi spicy (basically a physical challenge masquerading as lunch).

This tiny elderly woman with massive mortar and pestle literally laughs when tourists confidently order the hottest level. Som tam costs 80 THB now, sticky rice 25 THB to cool down your burning mouth. I've seen grown men who probably deadlift twice their body weight reduced to tears by her 'Thai spicy' level. Start with farang spicy unless you're absolutely certain—I learned this lesson the hard way after a morning run when my judgment was impaired by endorphins.

Located outside Jomtien Fresh Market on Thepprasit Road, open 11am-6pm daily. The stall has no English sign—look for the elderly woman with the biggest wooden mortar and pestle, usually surrounded by locals eating while sweating profusely. Distance from Central Pattaya: approximately 5.2km south, perfect cool-down walk after a beach run.

Pro tip from someone who runs daily in tropical heat: order som tam poo (with crab) if you can handle medium spice—the crab adds richness that balances the fire. And yes, I've mapped this as a legitimate fuel stop on my Jomtien running route. Sometimes you need something more intense than a sports drink.

Forget tourist trap seafood on Beach Road. Lung Sawai near Wat Phra Yai gets whole fish delivered twice daily from fishing boats. This is where Pattaya locals take families.

Grilled prawns 300 thb per kilo - massive ones that easily feed 2-3 people. Tom yum kung has actual depth instead of sugary tourist version. Fish priced by weight, they show you exactly what you're getting.

Take regular songthaew from Pattaya for standard local fare, about 15 minutes. Open 11am-10pm daily. No English menu but point at display case - you can't go wrong. Real kitchen skills here.

When thepprasit market officially shuts down around 11pm, look for the family stalls that stay open way later on the market's edges. Some cook fresh tom yum goong until 3am which is honestly a lifesaver after jomtien's bar crawls.

The tom yum costs 80-90 thb and actually burns your mouth not the sweet tourist version from walking street. Their late night khao pad gai is perfect drunk food and the plastic stools on concrete are exactly what you want when stumbling back from soi 6. Cash only obviously.

Small Korean place run by actual Koreans on Second Road near Soi 13. Their bulgogi is marinated for 24 hours and grilled tableside on proper charcoal. 320 THB per portion comes with banchan (side dishes) that they refill unlimited.

The kimchi is properly fermented and spicy, not the sweet tourist version. Try the galbi short ribs if you want to splurge - 480 THB but incredible quality. They import gochujang and other ingredients from Seoul. Cash only, no English menu but pointing at other tables works.

Look for vendors with charcoal grills around central Pattaya areas from 4 PM onwards. The best ones have been doing this for years and their pork skewers are perfect — Proper char, not overcooked, perfectly seasoned. Usually 15-20 THB each, and you can watch them work the grill.

Skip the tourist-friendly stalls on Beach Road that charge 25-30 THB for worse quality. Good spots focus on just pork skewers and sticky rice, that's it. No English spoken but just point and hold up fingers for how many you want. Cash only.

Terminal 21 Pattaya's top floor Pier 21 food court offers halal-certified Thai dishes with proper dress code respect. Air-conditioned comfort with harbor-themed decor. Most dishes under 100 THB including grilled chicken with sticky rice and beef noodle soup.

Located above the shopping floors at Beach Road intersection. Open 10 AM-10 PM daily. Much cleaner preparation than street vendors, appropriate dining environment for families observing dietary requirements.

Prayer room available on 6th floor for travelers needing worship space between meals and shopping.

Walking street vendors serve tourist versions of these desserts but naklua market on naklua road has the real deal from local families who've been making them for decades

Best khanom krok comes from the lady with the round copper pans near the market entrance around 5pm. Crispy outside creamy inside for 20 thb per set. She uses actual coconut cream not the powder stuff walking street uses

Mango sticky rice at naklua runs 60 thb with proper ripe mangoes and fresh coconut milk that hasn't been sitting under heat lamps all day. Take the blue songthaew from central pattaya for 10 thb. The quality difference is honestly night and day compared to tourist trap versions

Tucked away near Naklua Market, this family-run tea house serves traditional Thai tea (cha yen) made the old way - with real Ceylon tea and spices, not the artificial orange powder most places use. The tea has a rich amber color and complex flavor that bears no resemblance to the neon tourist version. While street cart versions offer authentic flavors too, this establishment provides a more refined tea house setting.

They also serve excellent Thai milk tea (cha nom yen) and if you're feeling adventurous, try their cha manao - Thai tea with fresh lime that's incredibly refreshing. Prices reflect the sit-down experience: 35 THB for cha yen, 40 THB for the milk version.

The grandmother who runs the place speaks limited English but will happily explain the different teas if you show interest. Open mornings and afternoons, closed during the hot midday hours like any sensible tea establishment. Perfect for those wanting proper Thai tea in a comfortable indoor setting rather than street-side.

Most pattaya restaurants water down spice for foreigners but lan pho naklua fish market vendors cook for locals who want real heat. Tell them "phet maak maak" (very very spicy) or point to what thai customers ordered.

The tom yum goong stalls near the market entrance around noon serve properly spicy versions - 80 thb bowls that'll clear your sinuses. Som tam lady by the fish weighing stations makes authentic northeastern-style papaya salad with "prik kee noo maak maak" (lots of bird chilies).

Take blue songthaew to naklua road for 10 thb. These vendors don't tone down spice because farangs rarely venture past walking street tourist zones.

Thepprasit Night Market operates daily but really comes alive during weekend evenings when the full local community gathers. Opens 4 PM daily for basic vendors, but the authentic atmosphere and complete food selection peaks Friday through Sunday nights. Street food generally ranges 40-150 THB depending on the dish.

Take songthaew down Thepprasit Road and ask for "talad yen" (night market). The seafood grilling area is in the back - pick your own fish and they'll grill it. During weekdays, you'll find fewer vendors but still get genuine local prices. Weekend evenings transform it into the full local experience with families doing their weekly shopping.

Bring small bills, most vendors can't break 1000 THB notes. While the weekend atmosphere is unbeatable, weekday visits still offer authentic local pricing without tourist markup.

Friday to Sunday nights, this market reaches its full potential with local families doing their weekly shopping. While vendors operate some stalls throughout the week, the weekend transformation brings zero tourists and pure local atmosphere. The street food section expands to 20+ stalls selling everything from grilled seafood to traditional desserts at local prices.

Must-try: street food in the 40-100 THB range including desserts, grilled seafood, and authentic som tam that'll actually challenge you. The fruit section has the freshest produce in Pattaya at local market prices.

Located on Thepprasit Road near the intersection with Sukhumvit. Park anywhere nearby and walk in. Bring cash and your appetite - weekends deliver the complete local market experience that weekday visits only hint at. Open 5 PM to 10 PM, but Friday through Sunday nights showcase the market's true character.

Most places serve overly sweet thai tea with food coloring. Mama Noi's cart on Soi Post Office makes it the old way - strong black tea, condensed milk, and actual spices. 25 THB for the best cup in Pattaya.

She's been there 15 years, same spot every afternoon from 2 PM. Recognizable by the vintage brass tea dispensers and the queue of Thai regulars. Also does excellent traditional coffee if you prefer. No English but pointing works fine.

Most tourists think they can handle spicy thai food until they try the real stuff. Here's how to get proper heat in pattaya without destroying yourself completely.

At som tam stalls, ask for "pet pet" (very spicy) instead of just "pet" (spicy). The vendor will usually give you a look to confirm you're serious. Mama noi's stall near jomtien market makes som tam that will make you cry — In the best way.

For real fire, order larb from isaan restaurants with "pet mak mak" (extremely spicy). Lao khao tom on second road serves northeastern cuisine that doesn't mess around with spice levels. Their larb gai will test your soul.

Never drink water with spicy thai food — It spreads the heat around your mouth. Order thai iced tea or eat plain rice to cool down.

The small chinese community around naklua road has maintained some wonderful traditional tea houses that most visitors never discover. Ah gong tea house on naklua soi 12 serves proper gongfu cha with vintage pu-erh and oolong varieties.

The elderly owner speaks limited english but his passion for tea transcends language barriers. A full tea session costs 200-300 thb and includes multiple steepings of premium leaves. Much more authentic than the westernized bubble tea places downtown.
