Language Tips for Cancún

Useful phrases, communication tips, and language barriers

Working on Spanish and here are phrases that made a real difference in Cancún, especially downtown.

"¿Cuánto cuesta?" (How much?) - Essential for markets and street food. More effective than pointing.

"¿Hay descuento?" (Discount?) - Works surprisingly often, especially markets or cash payments.

"Sin hielo, por favor" (No ice, please) - Avoids questionable ice in drinks. Locals understand tourist caution.

"La cuenta, por favor" (Check, please) - Servers appreciate effort, you won't wait forever.

"¿Dónde está el baño?" (Where's bathroom?) - Self-explanatory necessity.

Broken Spanish gets better prices and service than English. People appreciate effort even with terrible pronunciation like mine.

"¿Cuánto cuesta sin propina?" (How much without tip?) - useful at restaurants with automatic service charges.

"¿Hay descuento por efectivo?" (Cash discount?) - many places give 10% off for cash vs credit.

"Soy alérgico a..." (I'm allergic to...) - crucial for food allergies since menus don't always list ingredients clearly.

"¿Dónde está la parada de autobús?" (Where's the bus stop?) - more useful than asking for expensive taxis.

Learning these took my interactions from tourist-level to getting local prices and recommendations.
