Everyone does catamaran party boats to isla mujeres for like $80 but honestly the regular ferry is SO much better

Ultramar ferry from puerto juarez only 200 pesos round trip (like $11) runs every 30 minutes. Takes 20 minutes and you see the actual water instead of being trapped on booze cruise with drunk spring breakers

Once there rent golf cart 400-500 pesos for day and explore whole island. Playa norte is gorgeous and free, underwater sculpture museum is wild if you snorkel, food way cheaper than cancun

Pro tip: weekdays if possible. Weekends are crazy with locals from cancun too. Bring cash most places dont take cards

Getting There:

Ferry from Playa del Carmen: 250 pesos each way, hourly departures. Much cheaper than $80 USD tourist packages from Cancún.

Island Transport:

Scooter rental: 300 pesos/day. Taxis available but negotiate fixed rates upfront. Island is small but walking in heat isn't realistic.

Timing:

8am ferry from Playa del Carmen, 6pm return. Gives full day without rushing. Avoid Sundays - cruise ship chaos.

Best Activities:

Snorkeling the reef system is world-class. Rent gear on island for half the price of tour equipment.

Similar to how Koh Tao works from mainland Thailand - independent travel beats packaged tours every time.

Skip the overcrowded eco-parks. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve is untouched Caribbean coastline and mangroves worth the journey.

Book through Sian Ka'an Tours - pickup from Cancún hotels 7am, return 6pm. Includes boat rides through mangrove channels, cenote snorkeling, and beaches where you might be the only people.

Costs around $120 USD per person including lunch. Expensive but you're paying for pristine nature and small groups (max 12 people). This is what the Riviera Maya looked like before development.

Bring reef-safe sunscreen (required) and water shoes for rocky areas.
