Transport Tips for Lisbon
Getting around, public transit, taxis, and airport transfers
Tuk-tuk drivers around alfama quote 50-80 euros for 30min rides. That's insane for a glorified golf cart
Fair price is 20-25 euros max for standard alfama loop. Start at 15 euros, work up slowly. Half will say no but someone takes it. Hills are steep but totally walkable if not rushed
Better yet take bus 737 up the hill for 1.60 euros. Same views, fraction of cost, runs every 15min from rossio
Alfama's cobblestone streets and steep hills make wheelchair access nearly impossible. Don't let tourism sites fool you with vague "partially accessible" claims.
The Fado Museum has good wheelchair access and gives you the cultural experience without the impossible terrain. Elevator access, proper bathrooms, and air conditioning.
For views, skip the hilltop miradores and take the ferry to Cacilhas instead. Accessible boarding, great city views from the water, and costs just 1.30 euros each way. Much better than struggling up impossible hills.
The rickshaw guys will quote you insane prices like 60-80 EUR for a short tour. For basic rickshaw rides (different from motorized tuk-tuks which cost more), start at 10 EUR and be willing to walk away. Fair price is 10-15 EUR for 30 minutes in Alfama.
Best strategy is to approach them away from major tourist spots. Near the Cathedral they know you're desperate. Find them on side streets and you have more bargaining power. Remember these manual rickshaws are cheaper than motorized tuk-tuks but cover less ground - perfect for short scenic routes through narrow alleys.
Take the ferry from Belém to Trafaria for 1.25 EUR and you'll find completely empty beaches 15 minutes from central Lisbon. The ferry runs every hour and the crossing gives you amazing views back to the city.
Once in Trafaria, you're right at Praia de Trafaria. No crowds, no beach bars, just sand and Atlantic Ocean. Bring your own food and water though.
Ferry from cais do sodré to cacilhas = 1.30 EUR per crossing. Runs every 15 minutes til midnight. Postcard city views for what people pay 35 EUR for on tourist cruises
Beer at cacilhas terminal bar = 2.50 EUR. Sunset viewing time = 7:30pm in summer, 6pm in winter. Total cost for best views in city = 3.80 EUR. Cruise boats = ripoff confirmed
