Free to admire from outside, and the surrounding Satwa neighbourhood gives you a glimpse of Dubai's working-class Iranian community. Best light for photos around 4pm.

Hotels charge 100+ AED for shuttles around Palm Jumeirah, but golf cart taxis cruise the palm fronds for 25 AED flat rate anywhere on the island. Flag them down like regular taxis — They're everywhere near Atlantis, Nakheel Mall, and the monorail stations. Perfect for resort hopping without walking in the heat.

The cats of Bastakiya are practically an attraction themselves. These strays have made the heritage district their domain and locals feed them regularly.

You'll spot them lounging in the windtower courtyards and narrow alleyways. They're friendly and add character to what could otherwise feel like a sterile heritage site. Each one seems to have claimed a specific courtyard as their territory.

I spent weeks in this neighbourhood and the cats became part of my daily routine. Much more personality than half the paid attractions.
