Transport Tips for Cairo

Getting around, public transit, taxis, and airport transfers

23

Uber rides cost almost nothing compared to western cities and eliminate all the exhausting price negotiations. Airport to downtown runs 120-200 EGP depending on traffic, while pyramids from city center costs around 80-120 EGP. The apps show fixed transparent pricing so zero haggling or rigged meter tricks that plague street taxis.

Street taxis quote completely insane 'tourist rates' that are 5x normal price and deliberately take longer routes to jack up costs. The metro works great too — Line 1 hits Sadat station near Tahrir Square, Line 2 goes toward Giza, and the new Line 3 connects directly to the airport. Single rides cost just 7 EGP regardless of distance.

But honestly, Uber is so stupidly cheap here you might as well use it for convenience. Drivers are generally helpful with directions and many speak decent English. Book from inside cafes or hotels to avoid street touts who'll try selling you 'special taxi deals' that cost more than Uber anyway.

River taxi service between maadi and central cairo offers a completely different city perspective from the water. Check current schedules and pricing for this scenic route.

When operating, it passes luxury hotels, houseboats, gives you cairo skyline from the river. Much cheaper than felucca rides when available.

Can get crowded during rush hours but peaceful mid-morning or afternoon. Not fast but scenic.

Cairo presents serious challenges for wheelchair users due to its ancient infrastructure, but strategic planning allows access to major experiences with realistic expectations about limitations.

Grand Egyptian Museum (opening 2024) sets new standards with full accessibility - ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, and designated parking. The Giza Pyramids plateau has paved viewing paths to decent vantage points, though pyramid interiors remain inaccessible.

Hotels in Zamalek and Garden City like Marriott or Four Seasons typically offer ground-floor accessible rooms. Downtown and Islamic Cairo hotels often lack elevators or have narrow doorways typical of colonial-era buildings.

Al-Azhar Park features excellent pathways and accessible facilities. However, Khan el-Khalili's medieval streets with high curbs and narrow alleys present major obstacles. The Egyptian Museum's main floor is accessible, though older exhibits lack clear pathways.

Transport reality: Uber drivers generally assist with folding wheelchairs, but Cairo's broken sidewalks make street navigation difficult. Focus on newer attractions and upscale neighborhoods rather than historic Islamic Cairo for the most comfortable experience.
