Grand Egyptian Museum vs Old Cairo - realistic wheelchair accessibility in ancient sites

Cairo presents serious challenges for wheelchair users due to its ancient infrastructure, but strategic planning allows access to major experiences with realistic expectations about limitations.

Grand Egyptian Museum (opening 2024) sets new standards with full accessibility - ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms, and designated parking. The Giza Pyramids plateau has paved viewing paths to decent vantage points, though pyramid interiors remain inaccessible.

Hotels in Zamalek and Garden City like Marriott or Four Seasons typically offer ground-floor accessible rooms. Downtown and Islamic Cairo hotels often lack elevators or have narrow doorways typical of colonial-era buildings.

Al-Azhar Park features excellent pathways and accessible facilities. However, Khan el-Khalili's medieval streets with high curbs and narrow alleys present major obstacles. The Egyptian Museum's main floor is accessible, though older exhibits lack clear pathways.

Transport reality: Uber drivers generally assist with folding wheelchairs, but Cairo's broken sidewalks make street navigation difficult. Focus on newer attractions and upscale neighborhoods rather than historic Islamic Cairo for the most comfortable experience.
