Lamb & Flag, 33 Rose Street off Garrick Street near Covent Garden. 1667. Fits maybe 30 people max. Former nickname 'Bucket of Blood' from bare-knuckle boxing matches upstairs. Hand-pulled ales £6.50-7.50. Absolutely mental after 3pm when theatre crowds descend but brilliant energy.
Churchill Arms, 119 Kensington Church Street. Famous year-round flower displays covering entire facade. Random Thai kitchen tucked inside serving surprisingly excellent pad thai £12-15. Fuller's pints £6-7. Packed solid after 6pm — Arrive early or forget finding seats.
Skip Wetherspoons chains near major attractions. Cheap but zero soul and all taste identical.
Why Fontainebleau beats Versailles: Half the crowds, same royal history, and the forest is incredible for hiking. I've been taking this route for years and it's consistently underrated.
Getting there: Take RER A to Châtelet, transfer to RER D direction Montereau, get off at Fontainebleau-Avon (45 minutes total). From the station, take bus line 1 to the château (5 minutes) or walk through the town (15 minutes). The bus runs every 15 minutes.
The château: Napoleon's apartments are more interesting than anything at Versailles. The throne room where he abdicated is genuinely moving. Audio guide is €7 and worth every cent.
The forest: 25,000 hectares of hiking trails and rock climbing spots. Pick up a trail map at the tourist office near the château. The Gorges de Franchard circuit is perfect for beginners — 3km loop with amazing rock formations.
Total cost: €20 for transport, €13 château entry. Go on weekdays for the full peaceful experience.
Government Bus 389 from Suvarnabhumi Airport is the gold standard for budget travelers. Departs hourly 6am-10pm from Level 1, Gate 8, costs exactly 143 THB (no haggling), journey time 2 hours. Most departures go to Jomtien Bus Station on Thepprasit Road, but the final 10pm service terminates at North Pattaya Bus Station on Sukhumvit Road instead. Buy tickets at the official counter—ignore anyone approaching you with 'special deals.'
Bell Travel Service offers premium comfort from Suvarnabhumi with 5-6 daily departures (first at 8:30am, last at 6:00pm) to Pattaya Bus Terminal on North Pattaya Road. Tickets cost 200-370 THB depending on seat type, journey time 90-120 minutes with toilet stops. Book at Bell Travel's official website or their ground floor counter near domestic arrivals.
U-Tapao Airport Strategy changes everything if you can fly there instead. Only 45 minutes to Pattaya versus 2+ hours from Suvarnabhumi. Airport shuttle costs 200 THB or legitimate metered taxis run 400-500 THB—dramatically cheaper than the 2,000+ THB taxi mafia at Suvarnabhumi.
Pro tip from years of train travel: those aggressive taxi touts at Suvarnabhumi disappear once you walk past them to the official transport counters. The buses are punctual, air-conditioned, and you'll pocket 1,800+ THB savings per trip. That's enough for three days of excellent street food in Pattaya.
Skip the taksim tourist bars. Real istanbul nightlife happens in karakoy after 1am when the dinner crowd leaves.
Tiny bars on kemankesh caddesi and side streets stay open until 4-5am. Drinks are half the price of istiklal street. Actual locals, not backpackers taking selfies.
Under and 5. Kat are good starting points. Cash only at most places.
Book directly through Trenitalia or Italo instead of tourist booking sites that add 15-20% markup. High-speed trains run hourly Roma Termini to Firenze SMN in 1.5 hours.

ITALO: Usually €5-10 cheaper than Trenitalia, better wifi, leather seats vs fabric. Same journey time and stations.
Regional trains take 4+ hours and aren't worth the €15 savings unless you're truly desperate. High-speed is the only sensible option for this route.
Standard tickets include seat reservations automatically. Don't fall for rail pass sales at Termini — Overpriced for single trips.
