Transport Tips for Istanbul

Getting around, public transit, taxis, and airport transfers

Tourist Bosphorus cruises cost 300+ lira for crowded boats with commentary you can't escape. Bus 25E does the same European coastline route for your regular İstanbulkart fare (17.67 lira) — Starts at Sarıyer in the north, hugs the Bosphorus shore all the way down to Kabataş ferry terminal.

Grab left-side seats heading south for unobstructed water views. The 2-hour full route passes Rumeli Fortress, waterfront mansions in Bebek, and ends at Kabataş where ferries dock. Hop off anywhere that looks interesting — Arnavutköy for seafood restaurants, Ortaköy for the mosque views, or Beşiktaş for the weekend market.

Bus runs every 20-30 minutes from 6am to 11pm daily, dropping to 30-minute intervals after 8pm weekends. Unlike tour boats on fixed schedules, you control the timing. Want to spend an hour photographing Rumeli Fortress? Catch the next bus. Hungry in Bebek? Stop for lunch and continue later.

Only downside: gets crowded with standing room only during rush hours, and you're viewing from bus height rather than water level. But for budget travelers who want Bosphorus scenery without tour boat prices, nothing beats the 25E's bang for lira.

Those tourist boats charging 300+ lira for Bosphorus tours are highway robbery. The IDO public ferry from Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı covers the exact same route for 90 lira round trip, takes you further north than most tours, and gives you 2+ hours to explore at the destination instead of rushing back.

The ferry terminal at Eminönü is right behind the Spice Bazaar - look for the IDO signs with blue and white logos. Ferries depart multiple times daily (check IDO's schedule for exact times), and the 2-hour journey up the full Bosphorus beats any cramped tourist boat. You'll see both European and Asian shores, Ottoman palaces, the Bosphorus bridges, and fishing villages most tours skip.

Anadolu Kavağı itself is worth the trip - climb 15 minutes uphill to Yoros Castle (14th century Byzantine ruins) for Black Sea views with maybe 10 other people total. The village has excellent seafood restaurants like Balıkçı Sabahattin where fishermen sell their morning catch directly to the kitchen.

Pro tip: While bus 25E gives you coastal views, ferries offer water perspectives and avoid traffic completely. Sit on the right side heading north for the best palace views, left side for Asian shore villages.

Tourist cruises charge 800-1200 TRY for exactly what the regular ferry service provides. From Eminonu, take the standard city ferry line to Anadolu Kavagi and back - hits every palace, fortress and scenic point the tour boats do.

While IDO ferries offer premium service, even the basic city ferries are less crowded than tours, you can bring your own food and drinks, and locals actually use them so it feels genuine rather than touristy. Full round trip takes about 6 hours with a 3-hour stop in Anadolu Kavagi for lunch and exploring the castle ruins.

The ferry from Uskudar on the Asian side back to Eminonu gives you the classic money-shot view - the historic peninsula with all the domes and minarets.

Time it for late afternoon when the light hits the European side perfectly. 53.20 TRY with Istanbulkart, runs every 30 minutes. Grab the left side of the boat heading west.

This approach to Eminonu pier with Galata Bridge and old city skyline is what every visitor should see at least once. Golden hour timing is crucial - around 6pm in summer, 4pm in winter.

Everyone takes Bosphorus ferries but the Golden Horn route is way more interesting. Starts at Eyüp (near the mosque complex), stops at Fener/Balat, then Karaköy. 45 minutes, 25 TRY, runs every 30 minutes.

You see the old Byzantine seawalls, colorful neighborhoods from the water, and finish at Karaköy's modern art scene. Much better perspective than walking those steep Balat streets.

Dolmuş are shared minivans that run fixed routes all over Istanbul. They cost about the same as buses (15-25 TRY depending on distance) but you get a more local experience and they go places the metro doesn't reach.

Look for the blue and yellow vans with route destinations written on the front windshield. You wave them down like a taxi, pay the driver directly, and hop out anywhere along the route. Great for getting to neighborhoods like Ortaköy or Bebek that are harder to reach by metro. Drivers know every shortcut in the city.

Dolmuş are shared minibuses that run fixed routes but work like taxis. Pay the driver directly, hop off anywhere along the route. Much more interesting than metro and only costs 18 TRY per ride.

Popular routes: Taksim to Beşiktaş, Kadıköy to Bostancı, Eminönü to various neighborhoods. Look for signs with destination names in the front window.

Squeeze in with locals and experience real Istanbul transport culture. Just wave down the driver when you want to get off.

Skip the expensive tours to see how regular Istanbul residents live. Bus 28T from Taksim takes you through middle-class neighborhoods, past local parks, ends at Belgrade Forest for nature walks.

Check IETT for current fares and schedules, route runs regularly during the day. You'll see apartment blocks, local markets, suburban life tourists never experience. Plus Belgrade Forest has hiking trails and fresh air.

This bus route is basically a free scenic tour along the Golden Horn waterway. Goes from Eminönü to Eyüp Sultan Mosque, costs standard istanbulkart fare. You get great views of the old city, Galata Bridge, and historic neighborhoods without paying for expensive boat tours.

Sit on the right side going towards Eyüp for best water views. Route passes through Fener, Balat, Ayvansaray - all those colorful neighborhoods tourists love but usually only see from pricey Bosphorus cruises.

This route follows the ancient seawall of Constantinople along the Golden Horn. Start at Yenikapı metro station and catch the ferry northeast along the water toward Eminönü terminal. You'll pass the old city walls, several Ottoman mosques, and get amazing views across to Galata Tower.

The water route is completely flat with no traffic, though watch out for fishing lines from locals along the seawall when you dock. Early morning around 6-7am is perfect - you'll see the city waking up and catch the first ferries heading out.

End at Eminönü where you can grab fresh simit and çay from vendors. Total ferry ride is about 15 minutes with minimal crowds.

The fast IDO catamaran gets you there in 45 minutes but you miss everything. The slow Şehir Hatları ferry takes around 75-90 minutes but that's the point - watching Istanbul disappear slowly behind you while seagulls follow the boat.

Plus the slow ferry has that classic upper deck where you can feed seagulls and actually enjoy the journey. Fast ferry feels like an airport shuttle. Costs about the same but the experience is completely different.

Those bosphorus cruise boats charge 500-800 try for day passes. IETT bus 25E from Kabataş to Sarıyer covers the exact same european shore route for a standard 17 try istanbulkart fare

You dont get the annoying commentary but you do get to sit with actual istanbullular commuting to work. Plus buses run every 20 minutes instead of limited tourist boat schedules. The 25E hugs the bosphorus coastline past bebek, arnavutköy, and all those waterfront mansions the tour guides point at

After midnight when the metro stops, dolmuş minibuses still run from Ortaköy to Taksim and Beşiktaş. Around 41-42 TRY instead of 150+ for a taxi.

Look for the ones with Taksim or Beşiktaş written on the front. They get crowded with party-goers but it's part of the experience. Drivers are used to slightly drunk passengers and know all the shortcuts.

Skip the expensive fast boats and take the regular IDO ferry to the Princes' Islands. The slow ferry from Kabataş takes 60-80 minutes but that's the whole point - you get to watch Istanbul slowly disappear behind you while seagulls follow the boat.

The fast catamaran costs 3x more and you miss all the scenery. Plus the slow ferry has a proper café with Turkish tea and simit. Standard ferry fares versus premium express prices. Sometimes the best part of travel is not rushing.

Special Golden Horn routes stop at Fener, Balat, Kasımpaşa - places most people miss completely.

Same ferry price but you see the colorful houses from water level. 45 minutes end to end, hop off at Balat for those rainbow house photos then catch next one.

Beats fighting crowds on the main Eminönü routes and actually shows you different parts of the city.

Dont bother with those official airport taxis - theyll try to charge 500+ try to get anywhere. Download bitaksi instead, its like uber but local and actually works here. Fixed prices, no haggling, driver cant take scenic routes. Check current rates as they fluctuate with inflation vs the 400-600 tourist taxis demand. App has english and you pay through it so no cash drama

The Golden Horn ferry route hits historic neighborhoods that most tourists miss entirely. Starts at Eyüp, then stops at Ayvansaray, Fener, and Balat before reaching Karaköy.

Each stop shows different Ottoman architectural styles and local life. Ferry runs every 30 minutes, costs 25 TRY, and gives you waterfront views the whole way. Much more interesting than just doing Balat as a quick Instagram stop. You can hop off at any neighborhood and catch the next ferry.

Skip the tour buses. Route 28T from taksim shows you actual residential istanbul through middle-class areas.

Forget expensive taxis to the Bosphorus villages. Dolmuş minibuses run constantly from Taksim to Sarıyer for 12 TRY. Yellow minivans that stop anywhere you wave them down.

Route goes through Ortaköy, Bebek, Emirgan - all the waterfront spots tourists pay 300+ TRY to see by taxi. Driver calls out stops in Turkish but just show them your destination on Google Maps.

Authentic Istanbul experience and you'll be squeezed in with office workers and students. Pay the driver when you get off.

Skip expensive tours and take bus 110 from Taksim Square to Belgrade Forest. Hour-long ride through Istanbul's suburbs with views of Golden Horn and Bosphorus. Runs every 26-54 minutes.

Get off at Bentler stop for main forest entrance. Way cheaper than taxi and you see parts of Istanbul tourists never visit. Perfect nature day without breaking budget.
