Don't write off Dubai's underwater world — The city's artificial reef program has created thriving marine ecosystems that'll surprise even seasoned divers. Water temperature stays at a comfortable 24-28°C year-round, so a 3mm wetsuit is perfect for most conditions.
Top dive sites: The MV Dara wreck (15-21m depth) is the crown jewel — This 1961 passenger ship disaster site now hosts impressive grouper aggregations and cruising barracuda. The purpose-built artificial reefs around 18m depth have developed into genuine marine habitats over the past decade. Visibility ranges 3-6m depending on seasonal currents and weather — Not Red Sea crystal clear, but adequate for wreck exploration and marine life spotting.
Marine life highlights: Giant groupers (some approaching 2m), schools of barracuda, blue-spotted rays, and a surprising variety of smaller reef fish including sergeant majors and butterflyfish. The artificial structures have also attracted octopuses and moray eels.
Day trips from Jumeirah Beach Road start around 300 AED for two dives including all gear. Al Boom Diving runs PADI-certified operations with multilingual dive masters who know the local marine behavior patterns. Book directly to avoid tour operator markups.
Most people don't realize you can do proper diving from Bangkok. Koh Samet has 10-20m visibility and decent coral at sites like Ao Thian. Several dive shops run day trips for ฿2800-3500 including transport from Bangkok.
Not world-class diving, but if you're certified and missing the ocean, it scratches the itch. Two dives plus lunch, back to Bangkok by 8 PM. Water temp is 27-29°C year round.
The Firefly Experience: Kuala Selangor River hosts one of the world's largest firefly colonies - thousands of Pteroptyx tener synchronously flashing in berembang trees creating a natural Christmas light display. Peak activity occurs 45 minutes after sunset (around 8:15pm) when entire mangrove sections pulse with coordinated golden light. The 45-minute boat cruise costs RM15 adults, RM10 children.
Daytime Activities: Start with Bukit Malawati (Malawati Hill) - Dutch colonial fort ruins offering panoramic river views and resident silver leaf monkey troops. These Trachypithecus cristatus are habituated to humans but remain wild - observe from 3+ meters and never feed them. The nature reserve walking trail (2.3km loop) takes 90 minutes and features excellent bird watching opportunities.
Logistics & Planning: Day tours from KL run RM85-110 per person including transport, both attractions, and firefly cruise. Independent travel: Take KTM Komuter to Kuala Selangor town (1.5 hours), then taxi to Kampung Kuantan firefly park (RM25). River cruise operators include Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park - book sunset dinner at riverside seafood restaurants before the 8pm cruise departure.
Photography & Conservation: Fireflies are extremely sensitive to light pollution - no flash photography, phone lights, or torches during cruise. The synchronized flashing behavior is mating communication that artificial light disrupts. Bring natural insect repellent and closed shoes for mangrove boardwalks. Conservation fee (RM2) supports habitat protection efforts.
The loos in primarks basement are completely free, properly clean, and have those dyson hand dryers. Much better than paying £1 at most central london public toilets or buying something just to use café facilities.
Also works as meeting point since store is massive and easy to find. Oxford circus tube is right outside. Toilets are down escalators past home section.
Most people don't realise Singapore has diving. Pulau Hantu's reefs aren't world-class but visibility hits 8-10 metres on good days. Marine life includes seahorses, pipefish, various tropical species.
Day trips run S$120-150 including gear from several operators. Best conditions February-April when currents calm down. Shallow sites perfect for beginners or rusty divers getting back into it.
