Every tourist trap in Sultanahmet charges 300-500 TRY for 45-minute "authentic" dervish performances. It's dinner theater with spinning.
Galata Mevlevihanesi Museum has actual ceremonies on Sundays at 5pm for 150 TRY. Real deal - active Sufi practitioners, not actors in costumes. The building itself is a 13th-century dervish lodge.
Most tourists don't understand what they're watching anyway and just want photos.
Practical tip for hot summer days. The çırağan palace kempinski hotel on the bosphorus has this gorgeous lobby with marble bathrooms and powerful air conditioning. Security doesnt bother you if you walk in confidently and use the facilities
Perfect spot to cool down between sightseeing, use proper bathrooms, maybe grab overpriced but decent coffee if you want to sit for a while. The palace gardens are accessible too if you buy a drink at the café. Learned this trick after nearly melting in sultanahmet during august
While Gothic Quarter hostels put you right in the historic center, Gràcia hostels offer better value and a more authentic neighborhood experience. Generator Barcelona and other hostels offer competitive rates vs Gothic Quarter options, plus you're in an actual neighbourhood instead of tourist central.
Gràcia has real local bars, cheaper food, and better nightlife. You're still 5-10 minutes to city center on Metro L3 but without the 4am drunk tourists stumbling past your window.
Alternative recommendations: Casa Gracia, TOC Hostel Barcelona, or if you want private rooms, Hotel Casa Gracia. All within walking distance of Plaça del Sol. Perfect if you want to experience the local scene that everyone raves about.
Cusco is at 3,400m. I ignored the advice and felt awful for 2 days. Drink coca tea, avoid alcohol on day one, eat light, and don't do anything strenuous. Your body needs time to adjust.
Belle Blu at Via della Pelliccia 35 in Trastevere. Open daily 8am-10pm. €4 wash, €4 dry. Bring coins or use their change machine. Takes about 90 minutes total.
Avoid the one near Termini on Google Maps — Closed for years. Most hotels charge €8+ per item so laundromats save serious money for longer stays.
Onda Blu near San Lorenzo university area is cheaper at €3 wash but only open until 8pm. Students use it so gets busy afternoons.
