Day trips Tips for New York
Nearby excursions and side trips worth taking
Metro-North Hudson Line runs from Grand Central to beautiful towns along Hudson River. Round trip $15-30 depending on destination.
Cold Spring (1.5 hours): Antique shops, hiking trails, river views. Walk to Foundry Dock Park for Instagram-worthy Hudson Highlands shots.
Beacon (1.75 hours): Home to Dia Beacon contemporary art museum. Massive installations in converted factory space — Worth the trip alone. Trains every 2-3 hours weekends. Buy tickets at Grand Central or MTA app. Much cheaper than car rental plus upstate parking fees.
Northeast Regional to Philadelphia: 1h 30m, $29 if you book 2+ weeks ahead. Leave 8am, back by 9pm for a full day trip.
Philadelphia has incredible food scene, historical sites, completely different vibe from NYC. Liberty Bell and Independence Hall are free. Reading Terminal Market is amazing for food exploration.
Book directly through Amtrak. $29 tickets sell out quickly but $49 tickets usually available last minute. Still cheaper than a Broadway show.
Take A train all the way to Beach 90th Street-Holland for actual ocean waves just using your MetroCard. 50-70 minutes from Midtown but worth it on hot summer days.
Beach 67th Street stop has more food and surf shops. Beach 105th is quieter with fewer crowds. Boardwalk goes for miles — Perfect for running or walking.
Bring water and snacks since beach food is limited and expensive. Swimming is allowed but watch for strong currents. Better than paying for Hamptons transportation just to see ocean.
