When to go Tips for Los Angeles

Best seasons, weather, and timing your visit

Go at 6am when lights are still on but zero crowds. Security doesn't care if you're respectful about it

Lights turn off at sunrise but you get perfect 30min window of great lighting with no people. Parking free before 7am. Honestly life changing after seeing those sunset crowds

While the observatory itself is great for exhibits in the afternoon, if you're after those Instagram-worthy city views, timing matters. Everyone shows up at 6pm for a 7pm sunset and wonders why it's packed.

Get there at 4pm when the parking is still manageable and the light starts getting interesting. The city views are better with some haze anyway - creates layers and depth in photos.

The planetarium shows are decent if you need to kill time, but the real show is outside watching the light change over downtown. Different purpose than a casual afternoon visit.

Morning (8-10am): Best time for photos without crowds. Muscle Beach guys are already working out, street art looks fresh, boardwalk vendors setting up. This builds on earlier advice about authentic morning culture.

Avoid 11am-4pm: Peak tourist chaos intensifies after 10am. Parking nightmare, aggressive vendors, too hot for comfortable walking.

Evening (5-7pm): Sunset vibes, better people watching, bars opening. This is when Venice feels performative but entertaining instead of authentic.

Skip: The actual beach unless you're swimming. Sand is mediocre, water's cold. The boardwalk culture is the real attraction here.

Everyone says go at sunrise for photos but honestly who wants to wake up at 5am on vacation

Go at 2pm when parking is easy and you can actually enjoy the exhibits inside. Planetarium shows are way cooler than standing outside taking the same photo everyone else has

View is just as good afternoon and you can grab lunch in los feliz after. Sometimes the lazy option is the better option tbh

Look while completely avoiding Hollywood Boulevard is solid advice, some people are dragged there by family or have that one friend who insists. If you absolutely must go 6am is the only tolerable time. No crowds no aggressive street performers no human sized elmo demanding tips

Still dirty and disappointing but at least you can read the stars and take photos without someone photobombing for money. Bring coffee because nothing else is open

This is damage control not an endorsement. You'll still leave understanding why everyone says to skip it entirely.
