Transport Tips for Singapore

Getting around, public transit, taxis, and airport transfers

42

Airport Connection: East-West Line (Green) runs directly from Changi Airport Terminal 2/3 stations to downtown core. Journey takes 45 minutes to Raffles Place, costs S$2.50 with EZ-Link card. Trains run every 3-5 minutes during peak hours, every 7-12 minutes off-peak.

Key Tourist Lines: Circle Line (Yellow/Orange) connects Marina Bay Sands, Clarke Quay, and Orchard Road. Downtown Line (Blue) runs Bukit Panjang to Expo via Little India, Chinatown, and Bayfront stations. North-East Line (Purple) serves Little India, Clarke Quay, and HarbourFront for Sentosa access. Thomson-East Coast Line (Brown) is mostly operational with final stations opening through 2025.

Payment and Operations: System runs 5:30am to midnight daily, extending to 1am Fridays/Saturdays. Get EZ-Link cards at any station for S$12 (S$5 stored value + S$7 card fee) — Works on buses and some taxis too. Alternative: tap contactless bank cards via SimplyGo system, though EZ-Link remains more reliable for tourists.

Navigation Tips: All stations wheelchair accessible with lifts and minimal platform gaps. Use exits A, B, C system — Tourist areas typically use Exit A for main attractions. During rush hours (7-9am, 6-8pm), expect crowded trains especially on East-West and North-South Lines.

Yeah its cheesy and costs s$30-40 for 45 minutes but hear me out. These old uncles know every tiny lane and shop that youd never find walking. Mine took me through muscat street to a spice shop thats been family-run since 1920 then down arab street side alleys where traditional carpet weavers still work

Best part is they stop whenever you want photos and actually know the stories behind the shophouses. Way better than wandering aimlessly in the heat. Just negotiate the price first and agree on the route

The official Singapore River Cruise charges S$25 for 40 minutes, but local bumboat operators near Clarke Quay offer similar routes for S$10-15. These are working boats that locals use, not tourist packages with canned commentary.

You'll see the same landmarks — Boat Quay, Marina Bay, colonial buildings — But with more authentic atmosphere and real working river traffic. Boats run frequently during daylight hours, no reservation needed. Just walk up to any operator near the water taxi stands and negotiate the fare first.

Route 36 from orchard to marina bay is basically a city tour for bus fare. Runs along orchard road, past colonial district, around marina bay, then to gardens by the bay. Upper deck front seats give you views without the hop-on-hop-off markup

Takes about 45 minutes end to end, buses every 8-10 minutes. Use your ez-link card and its cheaper than coffee. Tourist buses charge s$40 for the same route while you get the real singapore experience with locals commuting to work

Yeah trishaw rides are totally touristy but theyre fun for photos and the old uncles have great stories about old singapore. Usually part of guided night tours lasting 1-1.5 hours around chinatown and little india

Routes take you through narrow streets you wouldnt walk otherwise. Drivers point out buildings with historical significance. Tours typically cost S$67-106 depending on operator and duration

Everyone takes the cable car or sentosa express but bus 174 goes right onto the island for regular bus fare (under s$2). You cross the causeway with great harbor views

The bus route from kampong bahru terminal takes you through local neighborhoods that tourists never see. Way more interesting than the sterile monorail experience. Runs every 15-20 minutes during the day

Journey takes 25 minutes with views of hdb estates, the port, and greenway corridors. You'll ride with locals heading to work rather than tour groups. Return journey offers sunset views over the western reservoirs if you time it right

Trishaw rides seem like tourist bait but theyre actually useful in chinatowns narrow back streets. The uncles know shortcuts through alleys and clan house courtyards youd never find walking.

S$50 for 45 minutes seems steep but they take you to family-run businesses and explain the architecture history. Plus great photo opportunities from the elevated seat. The stories about old singapore are worth it — These drivers remember the neighbourhood from decades ago.
