Day trip to Giverny by train is better than tour buses
Everyone does Versailles but Monet's house and gardens in Giverny is more peaceful and the train journey is part of the experience.
Route: RER A to Vernon-Giverny (45 minutes, €15 return), then rent a bike at the station (€14/day) or walk 4km through countryside.
Best timing: Gardens are incredible April through October — Water lilies bloom May to September, best in June-July. House has Monet's original furniture and Japanese prints collection. Much smaller than Versailles so you actually see everything properly in 3 hours.
Pro tip: Bring lunch — The village has one overpriced café. Station bike rental includes helmet and lock. Return trains every hour until 8pm. Total cost €35 vs €80+ for organized tours that rush you through.
Skip in winter — Gardens are dormant and weather makes cycling unpleasant.
