Sant'Ambrogio Market — where locals actually shop
This daily market in Piazza Ghiberti is where real Florentines buy groceries. Much smaller and calmer than tourist-heavy Mercato Centrale, with honest prices and vendors who have time for conversation. Covered section features excellent cheese, salumi, prepared foods, while outdoor stalls sell seasonal produce from local farms.
Optimal timing: 9-10am when everything is fresh but crowds haven't formed. Try porchetta sandwiches from the truck outside, or gather picnic supplies for nearby Parco Sant'Ambrogio. The surrounding neighborhood maintains authentic residential character missing from tourist zones.
Accessible via bus 23 from Duomo area, or pleasant 20-minute walk from Santa Croce. Operating Monday-Saturday, closed Sunday obviously.
