Khao Chi Chan limestone cliffs — basic rock climbing routes for beginners
The limestone cliffs around Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain) have some decent beginner and intermediate climbing routes. Most tourists just come to see the carved Buddha, but the rock quality is surprisingly good for sport climbing.
There are about 15 established routes ranging from 5.6 to 5.11 (French grades 4c to 6c). The easiest routes are on the left side of the main cliff face, away from the Buddha carving. You'll need to bring your own gear or arrange rental from Bangkok climbing shops before your trip — There's no equipment rental available locally in Pattaya.
Best climbing is early morning (6-9 AM) before it gets too hot. The rock can be sharp so bring extra tape for your hands. Park at the Buddha viewing area (free) and walk around the base to find the climbing sections. Always climb with a partner and let someone know your plans.
