Traveling NYC with kids — subway etiquette and stroller tips
While the subway presents serious challenges with strollers due to limited elevators and frequent breakdowns, it's not impossible with preparation. We learned to travel during off-peak hours and fold the stroller at busy stations. Locals will help you carry it up stairs if you ask nicely.
Union Square, Times Square, and Grand Central have working elevators 90% of the time. Download the MTA app to check elevator status before heading out. Some stations have ramps but they're often hidden.
Kids ride free under 44 inches tall but good luck fitting a family of 5 through one MetroCard turnstile during rush hour. Get separate cards.
